planet like earth found in star's habitable zone

Scientists and their Kepler spacecraft have discovered for the first time a planet in distant space that is much like Earth, circling a sun-like star and lying in a region neither too hot nor too cold for an atmosphere that could support some form of life.
The temperature on that planet, the scientists say, probably is a comfortable 72 degrees, rain or shine.
The planet, whose discovery was announced Monday at NASA's Ames Research Center in Mountain View, was first detected by NASA's Kepler spacecraft two years ago, shortly after it began surveying 155,000 stars in the constellations Cygnus and Lyra.
Dubbed Kepler 22b, the planet exists in what astronomers call the habitable zone of a solar system at whose center is a star only a little smaller and fainter than Earth's sun. It lies about 600 light-years away and is 2.4 times Earth's size, although its mass is still unknown, said William Borucki, the leader of the Kepler science team.
Kepler 22b circles its sun every 290 days, compared with Earth's year of 365 days, the Kepler team has determined.

Listening for life

The planet's discovery is intriguing enough that astronomers at the SETI Institute in Mountain View are about to tune their array of 42 radio telescopes, located in a valley near Redding, to listen for possible signals that could - just conceivably - indicate there's a civilization on the planet.
"This is a superb opportunity for SETI observations," said Jill Tarter, director of the SETI Institute's search for signs of extraterrestrial life.
Whether Kepler's planets harbor civilizations remains, of course, unknown, she said, but "we won't know unless we look."
Science fiction? Not at all.
The Kepler spacecraft has now discovered 2,326 "candidate" planets in habitable zones, and of these, 207 are roughly the size of Earth. The rest are the size of Neptune or Jupiter, or even larger, according to Natalie Batalha an astrophysicist at San Jose State University and deputy leader of the Kepler group.
"The tremendous growth in the number of Earth-size candidates tells us that we're really homing in on the planets Kepler was designed to detect - those that are not only Earth-size, but are also potentially habitable," she said.
Habitable regions, which astronomers like to call "Goldilocks zones," are areas around stars where temperatures would be just right for supporting life.
"Candidate" planets are considered true planets when astronomers can confirm that they aren't a pair of "binary" stars orbiting each other, or some other false signal.
The spacecraft's powerful and highly sensitive telescope detects planets by measuring the tiny dimming of the star's light as an object passes - or transits - in front of it. In the case of Kepler 22b, the spacecraft has seen the planet transiting its sun more than three times - a criterion for identifying it.

'Christmas planet'

The space-borne telescope first detected the planet passing in front of its sun nearly two years ago, just after the spacecraft became operational, Borucki said. The second crossing was seen just before the spacecraft went offline temporarily, and the planet's third transit was detected just before Christmas last year.
"It was a great gift," Borucki said. "We consider it sort of our Christmas planet."

Only a few of those detected so far have the right size and orbit to be considered suitable for life.
The HEC is being compiled by the Planetary Habitability Laboratory (PHL) at the University of Puerto Rico in Arecibo, home of the world's largest single-dish radio telescope.
As well as identifying potentially life-bearing worlds, including ''exomoons'' like Pandora in the movie Avatar, it ranks them according to various indices of habitability.
''One important outcome of these rankings is the ability to compare exoplanets from best to worst candidates for life,'' said project leader Dr Abel Mendez, director of the PHL.
''New observations with ground and orbital observatories will discover thousands of exoplanets in the coming years. We expect that the analyses contained in our catalogue will help to identify, organise and compare the life potential of these discoveries.''
The two confirmed ''habitable'' exoplanets are Gliese 581d and HD 85512b.
Gliese 581d orbits a red dwarf star around 20 light years away and is one of a family of at least six planets.
The planet has about six times the mass of Earth and is just inside the parent star's habitable or ''Goldilocks'' zone, theorbital band where the temperature is ''just right'' to allow liquid surface water.
French researchers have run computer simulations which suggest the planet could have oceans as well as clouds and rainfall.
HD 85512b is about 36 light years away in the constellation of Vela and classed as a ''super-earth,'' having about 3.6 times the Earth's mass. It also lies within its star's habitable zone.
The catalogue uses habitability assessments such as the Earth Similarity Index (ESI), the Habitable Zones Distance (HZD) and Global Primary Habitability (GPH).
Planets are also compared with the Earth both in its current state and in the past.
Dr Jim Kasting, an expert on planetary habitability science from Pennsylvania State University in the US, said: ''I hope this database will help increase interest in building a big space-based telescope to observe exoplanets directly and look for possible signatures of life.''

NEW EARTH - KEPLER 22-b




Astronomers have confirmed the discovery of an Earth-like planet which they say could be a potential future home for mankind outside the solar system.


The planet, Kepler 22-b, lies about 600 light-years away and is 2.4 times the size of Earth, and has a temperature of about 22 degree Celsius. It is the closest confirmed planet yet to one like ours -- an “Earth 2.0”, says a team at NASA.


The new planet, confirmed by the astronomers using the US space agency's Kepler telescope, contains both land and water and has the right atmosphere to potentially support life, the media reported.


One of the key criteria for a planet to be habitable is that it remains roughly the right distance from its main star to be neither too cold nor too hot. And, the team says that the Kepler 22-b is in the “habitable zone” around a star not unlike our own.

Kepler 22-b - planet like earth

Today sees the announcement that one of the “candidate” planets listed from NASA’s Kepler mission back in February is now confirmed, and it’s a key one. At 2.4 times the diameter of the Earth the planet Kepler 22-b also orbits its parent star (which is a slightly less massive G-dwarf star than the Sun and 25% less luminous) in 290 Earth-days, which places it within the nominal “habitable zone“. This system is about 600 light years from us.
This confirmation is one of a host of new results, as well as many new candidates. Altogether Kepler now has a staggering list of 2,326 possible planet detections, 207 of which are close to Earth in size and 680 are “super Earth” sized (i.e. up to about 10 times as large).
Interestingly, Kepler 22-b showed up as a transit signature just 3 days into Kepler’s science observations back in 2009, but the protocol is to wait for 3 confirmed transit events before calling a detection a bona-fide confirmed planet.
So here it is, arguably a much better candidate than some others we’ve heard about over the past 36 months (including the seemingly ill-fated Gliese 581 g that was claimed to be an Earth-like world). But as always there are many ifs, buts, and maybes. The habitable zone is estimated (with variations in method) assuming that a planet has an Earth-like atmosphere, since the greenhouse effect is a vital ingredient in setting the surface temperature to between 0 and 100 Celsius (freezing and melting point of water). And of course, for there to be liquid water on the surface (an assumed critical factor for life as we know it – as a biochemical-solvent and essential part of geophysical and climate cycles) there has to be water. Neither of these two basic items are known to exist in this case, and so as glorious as Kepler 22-b is, it represents the tip of the iceberg (no watery pun) in terms of what’s coming next and what we need to do next – which is get our hands on spectroscopic measurements of Earth-sized and super-Earth sized worlds.
How are we going to do that? Well, first we really need the James Webb Space Telescope to launch, and then it would be really, really cool if we could have something like the New Worlds Mission launch along with it…

Hollywood Tom Cruise In India


Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise, who is in India to promote the fourth installment of his "Mission Impossible" franchise, has squeezed in a special visit on his chock-a-block itinerary -- the Taj Mahal in Agra. And guess who accompanied him in this mission? Co-star Anil Kapoor.
Cruise landed in Delhi early Saturday and headed straight to the Leela Palace, Chanakyapuri. He stayed at the hotel's exquisite Maharaja suite, which has a personal gym, jacuzzi and is one of the most expensive suites in the country, said sources.
From there, the 49-year-old left for Agra with his "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" co-star Anil Kapoor. The international star would be staying in Oberoi Amar Villas in the Taj city.
Kapoor is also set to co-host a party for Cruise along with Viacom 18 in Mumbai Saturday night.
The bash would be a private 150-guest affair at the Taj Rooftop, Colaba. However, some Bollywood's A-listers like Ajay Devgn, Akshay KumarSalman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan would not be seen at the bash as they are either out of town or have expressed their inability to join in.
The only Khan superstar at the bash would be Aamir.
"We had originally planned to invite 200 guests. That's now been narrowed down to 150," says a source.
"Tom is a really cool guy. When Anil asked him whom he'd like to meet from Bollywood and from other walks of life he said, 'No one and everyone'. Tom says he's on a mission to promote 'Mission Impossible'.
"So for him, the fan interaction is the most important part of his itinerary. The only desire he expressed for his India visit was to visit the Taj Mahal," he added.
The guest list also includes names like Mukesh and Neeta Ambani, the Godrejs, Birlas, the Bachchans (minus Aishwarya), Aamir KhanKatrina Kaif and Karan Johar.
"In Mumbai, Kapoor is expected to whisk Tom for a brief visit to see his home and meet his family -- again Tom's wish. Then, Tom checks into his hotel, prepares for the party which is expected to last for no more than two hours. He says he wants to be fresh for the fan interaction on Sunday," the source added.
Cruise, who features as intelligence agent Ethan Hunt in the popular film franchise, is hosting a special screening for 1,500 fans two weeks before the film's worldwide release Dec 21.

AIDS Epidemic - ending: Toward an AIDS-Free Generation


On this World AIDS Day -- 30 years after the first cases of HIV were reported in the U.S. and with 34 million people currently infected worldwide -- there is finally a roadmap for ending the AIDS epidemic globally and achieving an AIDS-free generation. Today, President Obama is announcing that we are at the beginning of the end of AIDS and that the U.S. pledges to boost spending on treatment of the virus in the U.S. by $50 million dollars. Additionally, the President will set a goal of getting antiretroviral drugs to 2 million more people around the world by the end of 2013, and aim to get drugs to 1.5 million HIV-positive pregnant women to prevent them from passing the virus to their children.
An AIDS-free generation means no child will be born with HIV; risk of infection will be dramatically reduced thanks to a combination of powerful prevention tools and a possible vaccine in the future; and people living with HIV will enjoy long, healthy lives as early access to treatment prevents their disease from progressing to full-blown AIDS. In order to achieve this, we must: 1) invest in research and accelerate the translation of science into services; 2) eradicate mother-to-child transmission of HIV worldwide; 3) scale-up evidence-based treatment and prevention strategies globally; and 4) eliminate the discrimination and stigma surrounding the disease.
First, research. Science has given us the tools to begin to end the AIDS epidemic, but government and private sector commitment, international collaboration, political will, and leadership are needed to reach this goal. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton recently spoke at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), highlighting how American investments in research over the past 30 years have yielded lifesaving dividends that will help end the AIDS epidemic. Her remarks echoed the message of a recent Capitol Hill Conference convened in July, 2011 by amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, that we can make AIDS history by applying scientific research advances and committing the necessary resources and leadership to achieve this goal.
In the past year alone, U.S.-funded studies have produced dramatic results that will contribute to making AIDS history. An NIH-supported clinical trial provided evidence that HIV/AIDS treatment with antiretroviral medications (ARVs) not only saves the lives of those receiving medication but also prevents new infections. [1] When people with HIV initiated ARV treatment early in the course of infection, they reduced the risk of sexual transmission of HIV to others by 96 percent. This is the reason the Scientific Advisory Board of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has called for accelerating the scale-up of ARVs. [2] UNAIDS reports that ARV treatment has saved the lives of 2.5 million people in low and middle income countries since 1995, but less than 50 percent of people who need treatment have access. [3] Results of other studies reported this year have shown that HIV-negative men who have sex with men (MSM) and members of heterosexual couples who took a daily antiretroviral pill as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) dramatically reduced their risk of acquiring HIV as well. [4] [5] [6] The relative risk of acquiring HIV for MSM was reduced by 44 percent overall, and by 92 percent among those who took the drug as prescribed (documented by detectable levels of the medication in their blood). Risk of acquiring HIV was reduced by 49 to 75 percent among members of heterosexual couples. Additionally, NIH-supported research has found that medical male circumcision reduces the risk of HIV acquisition among men by 53 percent, and an antiretroviral microbicidal vaginal gel reduced HIV risk in women by 39 percent overall, and by 54 percent among those who used the product regularly. [7] [8] However, another major study of a microbicide gel containing tenofovir was recently discontinued because it was found to be ineffective at preventing HIV transmission in women. [9]
Even though there are so many recent scientific advances and new prevention and treatment strategies to celebrate, there is still much to do. The ultimate goal in public health is the discovery a vaccine and a cure for a disease. Now, 30 years after the first cases of HIV were identified in the U.S., a cure is finally on the horizon. A formerly HIV-positive man appears to have been functionally cured of AIDS through a bone marrow stem cell transplant for his leukemia using cells from a donor immune to HIV. [10] Since the time of the transplant, the patient has been HIV-negative and no longer requires treatment with antiretroviral medications. [11] This case has provided hope and fueled a new generation of studies including gene therapy research. It is whyamfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research has spearheaded multi-site research collaborations and awarded grants to foster scientific discovery aimed at finding a cure. Additionally, the NIH recently provided $14 million in new funding to establish public-private partnerships toward this goal. While progress has been made in developing a vaccine to prevent HIV infection in recent years, more research is urgently needed. [12] The bottom line is that America's investment in research saves lives and provides hope for an AIDS-free generation worldwide.
Second, eradicating mother-to-child transmission of HIV. PEPFAR and UNAIDS are leading a global partnership to end HIV among infants by 2015 through prevention of mother- to-child transmission (PMTCT) services. In 2010, 52 percent of pregnant women living with HIV did not receive effective PMTCT. [13] The virtual elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in the United States demonstrates that it is possible to eradicate pediatric AIDS globally if we commit the needed sources worldwide. A key component of this effort is an increased focus on women and girls who represent 50 percent of HIV cases globally and an even greater percentage in sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean. [14] AIDS is the leading killer of women of reproductive age worldwide. [15] Implementing a woman- and girl-centered approach is one of the guiding principles of the Global Health Initiative, the U.S. government's strategy to improve health outcomes through the integration of investments in eradication and control of specific diseases like AIDS with the strengthening health systems worldwide. [16]
Third, scaling-up combination evidence-based prevention and treatment interventions. In addition to increasing the reach of effective PMTCT services, voluntary medical male circumcision and the scale-up of treatment for people living with HIV are essential components of the roadmap to end the AIDS epidemic. Studies have found that treatment isprevention, reducing transmission of the virus to others by more than 96 percent. Thus, treatment pays a dual dividend by saving lives as well as preventing new infections. These services must be combined with other proven effective practices including condom use, behavioral interventions, counseling and testing, and health systems strengthening. No one intervention can create an AIDS-free generation, but effective interventions that are used in combination with each other can move us closer to our goal. Mathematical models have demonstrated that scaling up prevention strategies and treatment in high prevalence countries would drive down the global infection rate by an estimated 40 to 60 percent. That's in addition to the 25 percent decline in new infections that has been achieved in the past decade. This would represent a significant tipping point in the epidemic toward ending AIDS.
Fourth, reducing stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS. Discriminatory laws that criminalize people's sexual orientation and prohibit syringe exchange programs for injection drug users (IDU) must be repealed. Studies have shown that HIV-related stigma is associated with transmission risk behaviors among MSM. [17] Research has also found a strong positive correlation between drug use stigma and HIV injection drug use risk behaviors. [18] Repealing laws that prohibit the operation or funding of syringe exchange programs will help reduce this stigma as well as decrease the 10 percent of HIV infections annually that are due to IDU around the world. Additionally, women face stigma and discrimination that increase their risk of HIV transmission. One model estimates that stigma is associated with as many as one-half of new HIV infections among children because women refuse to take HIV tests or fail to go back to the clinic to learn their results. [19] Secretary Clinton underscored that reducing discrimination against women and girls and stopping gender-based violence and exploitation are critical components of comprehensive HIV prevention.
The Path to Progress
The remarkable progress toward an end to AIDS made over the past 30 years is being threatened by a decline in resources to support HIV research and services. While U.S. global health investments represent only about 1 percent of America's budget, these funds support lifesaving research and services for millions of people in developing nations and help build a world with more friends and fewer enemies. If support for global health is cut through the automatic trigger for sequestration of funds under the Budget Control Act of 2011, a recent report by amfAR estimates that in fiscal year 2013:
• Treatment funding for 403,000 people will not be available, resulting in 92,000 more AIDS-related deaths and 181,000 more children becoming orphans;
• Funding for food, education and livelihood assistance will not be available for 419,000 children;
• 10,000 more infants will die of AIDS-related causes before the age of 1 due to a lack of services for PMTCT; and
• AIDS research at the NIH will lose $339 million in funding.
Additionally, because of limitations in funding from donor nations, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria recently announced that it will not make any new grants until at least 2014. [20] Cuts in support for these programs will lead to significant morbidity and mortality from HIV/AIDS.
This potential loss in human life and scientific support is alarming for many reasons. Precious lives will be lost and human suffering will increase worldwide. Furthermore, the health security of the U.S. population is tied to the health of people in other countries and reflects our character as a nation. [21] As President John F. Kennedy once said, "Our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this planet. We all breathe the same air... And we are all mortal." Infectious diseases cross borders and pose real threats to the lives of Americans. [22] The National Intelligence Council (NIC) has examined the connections between global health and U.S. national security. [23] A 2008 NIC report noted the significant impact of infectious illnesses slowing economic growth in developing countries of strategic importance to the United States, potentially disrupting the process of democratization and affecting political stability in these nations. At the United Nations General Assembly in September 2011, President Obama emphasized, "To stop disease that spreads across borders, we must strengthen our systems of public health. We will continue the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. We will focus on the health of mothers and children. And we must come together to prevent, detect and fight every kind of biological danger -- whether it's a pandemic like H1N1 or a terrorist threat or a treatable disease." [24]
It should be underscored that on this World AIDS Day 2011, AIDS is very much a treatable disease.
And that is why despite the funding challenges that exist as a result of the current economic recession, the United States -- by working more effectively and efficiently, joining forces with other nations and partners to scale-up treatment and high impact prevention programs, to target high risk populations, and to build sustainable health systems -- can translate scientific advances into lifesaving services to make AIDS history. We can achieve what was once thought impossible: an end to the global AIDS epidemic!
