planet like earth found in star's habitable zone

Scientists and their Kepler spacecraft have discovered for the first time a planet in distant space that is much like Earth, circling a sun-like star and lying in a region neither too hot nor too cold for an atmosphere that could support some form of life.
The temperature on that planet, the scientists say, probably is a comfortable 72 degrees, rain or shine.
The planet, whose discovery was announced Monday at NASA's Ames Research Center in Mountain View, was first detected by NASA's Kepler spacecraft two years ago, shortly after it began surveying 155,000 stars in the constellations Cygnus and Lyra.
Dubbed Kepler 22b, the planet exists in what astronomers call the habitable zone of a solar system at whose center is a star only a little smaller and fainter than Earth's sun. It lies about 600 light-years away and is 2.4 times Earth's size, although its mass is still unknown, said William Borucki, the leader of the Kepler science team.
Kepler 22b circles its sun every 290 days, compared with Earth's year of 365 days, the Kepler team has determined.

Listening for life

The planet's discovery is intriguing enough that astronomers at the SETI Institute in Mountain View are about to tune their array of 42 radio telescopes, located in a valley near Redding, to listen for possible signals that could - just conceivably - indicate there's a civilization on the planet.
"This is a superb opportunity for SETI observations," said Jill Tarter, director of the SETI Institute's search for signs of extraterrestrial life.
Whether Kepler's planets harbor civilizations remains, of course, unknown, she said, but "we won't know unless we look."
Science fiction? Not at all.
The Kepler spacecraft has now discovered 2,326 "candidate" planets in habitable zones, and of these, 207 are roughly the size of Earth. The rest are the size of Neptune or Jupiter, or even larger, according to Natalie Batalha an astrophysicist at San Jose State University and deputy leader of the Kepler group.
"The tremendous growth in the number of Earth-size candidates tells us that we're really homing in on the planets Kepler was designed to detect - those that are not only Earth-size, but are also potentially habitable," she said.
Habitable regions, which astronomers like to call "Goldilocks zones," are areas around stars where temperatures would be just right for supporting life.
"Candidate" planets are considered true planets when astronomers can confirm that they aren't a pair of "binary" stars orbiting each other, or some other false signal.
The spacecraft's powerful and highly sensitive telescope detects planets by measuring the tiny dimming of the star's light as an object passes - or transits - in front of it. In the case of Kepler 22b, the spacecraft has seen the planet transiting its sun more than three times - a criterion for identifying it.

'Christmas planet'

The space-borne telescope first detected the planet passing in front of its sun nearly two years ago, just after the spacecraft became operational, Borucki said. The second crossing was seen just before the spacecraft went offline temporarily, and the planet's third transit was detected just before Christmas last year.
"It was a great gift," Borucki said. "We consider it sort of our Christmas planet."

Only a few of those detected so far have the right size and orbit to be considered suitable for life.
The HEC is being compiled by the Planetary Habitability Laboratory (PHL) at the University of Puerto Rico in Arecibo, home of the world's largest single-dish radio telescope.
As well as identifying potentially life-bearing worlds, including ''exomoons'' like Pandora in the movie Avatar, it ranks them according to various indices of habitability.
''One important outcome of these rankings is the ability to compare exoplanets from best to worst candidates for life,'' said project leader Dr Abel Mendez, director of the PHL.
''New observations with ground and orbital observatories will discover thousands of exoplanets in the coming years. We expect that the analyses contained in our catalogue will help to identify, organise and compare the life potential of these discoveries.''
The two confirmed ''habitable'' exoplanets are Gliese 581d and HD 85512b.
Gliese 581d orbits a red dwarf star around 20 light years away and is one of a family of at least six planets.
The planet has about six times the mass of Earth and is just inside the parent star's habitable or ''Goldilocks'' zone, theorbital band where the temperature is ''just right'' to allow liquid surface water.
French researchers have run computer simulations which suggest the planet could have oceans as well as clouds and rainfall.
HD 85512b is about 36 light years away in the constellation of Vela and classed as a ''super-earth,'' having about 3.6 times the Earth's mass. It also lies within its star's habitable zone.
The catalogue uses habitability assessments such as the Earth Similarity Index (ESI), the Habitable Zones Distance (HZD) and Global Primary Habitability (GPH).
Planets are also compared with the Earth both in its current state and in the past.
Dr Jim Kasting, an expert on planetary habitability science from Pennsylvania State University in the US, said: ''I hope this database will help increase interest in building a big space-based telescope to observe exoplanets directly and look for possible signatures of life.''

NEW EARTH - KEPLER 22-b




Astronomers have confirmed the discovery of an Earth-like planet which they say could be a potential future home for mankind outside the solar system.


The planet, Kepler 22-b, lies about 600 light-years away and is 2.4 times the size of Earth, and has a temperature of about 22 degree Celsius. It is the closest confirmed planet yet to one like ours -- an “Earth 2.0”, says a team at NASA.


The new planet, confirmed by the astronomers using the US space agency's Kepler telescope, contains both land and water and has the right atmosphere to potentially support life, the media reported.


One of the key criteria for a planet to be habitable is that it remains roughly the right distance from its main star to be neither too cold nor too hot. And, the team says that the Kepler 22-b is in the “habitable zone” around a star not unlike our own.

Today sees the announcement that one of the “candidate” planets listed from NASA’s Kepler mission back in February is now confirmed, and it’s a key one. At 2.4 times the diameter of the Earth the planet Kepler 22-b also orbits its parent star (which is a slightly less massive G-dwarf star than the Sun and 25% less luminous) in 290 Earth-days, which places it within the nominal “habitable zone“. This system is about 600 light years from us.
This confirmation is one of a host of new results, as well as many new candidates. Altogether Kepler now has a staggering list of 2,326 possible planet detections, 207 of which are close to Earth in size and 680 are “super Earth” sized (i.e. up to about 10 times as large).
Interestingly, Kepler 22-b showed up as a transit signature just 3 days into Kepler’s science observations back in 2009, but the protocol is to wait for 3 confirmed transit events before calling a detection a bona-fide confirmed planet.
So here it is, arguably a much better candidate than some others we’ve heard about over the past 36 months (including the seemingly ill-fated Gliese 581 g that was claimed to be an Earth-like world). But as always there are many ifs, buts, and maybes. The habitable zone is estimated (with variations in method) assuming that a planet has an Earth-like atmosphere, since the greenhouse effect is a vital ingredient in setting the surface temperature to between 0 and 100 Celsius (freezing and melting point of water). And of course, for there to be liquid water on the surface (an assumed critical factor for life as we know it – as a biochemical-solvent and essential part of geophysical and climate cycles) there has to be water. Neither of these two basic items are known to exist in this case, and so as glorious as Kepler 22-b is, it represents the tip of the iceberg (no watery pun) in terms of what’s coming next and what we need to do next – which is get our hands on spectroscopic measurements of Earth-sized and super-Earth sized worlds.
How are we going to do that? Well, first we really need the James Webb Space Telescope to launch, and then it would be really, really cool if we could have something like the New Worlds Mission launch along with it…
